Gun sales soar since September 11th attacks
Dennis Ferrier
December 28, 2001
Tennesseans have bought more guns in the past 90 days, than any other 3 months period in state history. Clearly, September 11th has had an impact. And not just on gun sales, but on the number of people getting a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Kim Parker wears a concealed handgun. There are another 99 thousand Tennesseans just like her. And that's just in the seven years its been legal.
This year's numbers are stuck in a broken state computer. But firearms instructor John M.L. Brown says when the numbers do come in, this will be a record year for concealed weapon permits. I don't think anybody thinks Osama Bin Laden is going to slide down the chimney, but it renews the desire for people to take care of themselves.
That's how Kim Parker feels. September 11th just reinforces her own resolve to never be a victim. It seems to me that people have become more aware of their own vulnerability. You know sometimes, I leave the garage door unlocked and I mean that's just one thing. And we see the little things in their lives that puts them at risk.
Kim is on to something. From September first to December first, Tennesseans bought more than 73 thousand guns. In the same period last year: 61 thousand. Gun sales are up nearly 20%. Now some people are going to worry that too many people are carrying guns. A person with a permit has gone to the trouble to be law-abiding. The stats back me up on that, says Brown.
In fact, nationwide, less than 1 percent of concealed weapons permit holders have had their permits revoked. But of course a lot of those 73 thousand guns sold since September 11th went to people without training.
Kim Parker has a message for them: get some training. I think I was nervous and scared because I had never held a weapon before. This had made me feel safe carrying the arm and I definitely feel safe now.
The state computer that keeps track of handgun carry permits has been out of commission since May.
