The reason that ethical lapses are holding back the Party is not that
people think we are less honest than our opponents -- tough recent
aspirants for the Republican or Democratic nomination for President have
not launched their campaigns by putting the National Party's senior
employee's mistress on the payroll -- but that those ethical lapses have
diverted hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars of donations into
let us say interesting expenditures. The equivalent for the D and R
parties might be a hundred million dollars or more. When a Presidential
campaign that is talking about outreach to the public spends 1 percet of
its income on advertising and a third or so on staff salaries, there are
reasons to suspect that something is a bit odd.
We should be running a political party, not -- as one National Review
writer put it -- a feeding trough for political consultants.
