Dear Joel,
Tonight is the first session of the Phoenix Citizen's Police Academy. This session is supposed to be about ethics (or lack theirof), gangs (other than the one with badges), and community based policing (or paramilitary occupation). I will let you know how it goes if I come back. If not, you know to where I disappeared :-) The following is the letter I received inviting me.
Comradely,
Kevin
Dear Mr. Walsh:
Congratulations! You have been selected to attend the 44th session of the Citizen Police Academy.
Although the curriculum and teaching methods are similar to the traditional police academy, these sessions are not designed to make you a police officer. As a student, you will become familiar with the operations of the Phoenix Police Department and gain a deeper understanding of the problems facing officers. In addition, you will complete (on a voluntary basis) a short familiarization course on the use and handling of a standard issue firearm and be allowed to complete an eight-hour tour of duty with a patrol officer. Due to security and personal safety issues, we ask that you leave any weapons at home or secured in your vehicle while attending the Citizen Police Academy class and participating in the ride-along program.
...{precise details omitted}
Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to having you as a member of this class.
Sincerely,
Harold L. Hurtt Police Chief
